How can I pay for my ticket in Birr (ETB), the Ethiopian currency?

In order to facilitate the purchase of SAM tickets to Ethiopian participants and thus allow them to pay in local currency, we have created an M-BIRR account to make payments by phone.

If you live in Ethiopia, you can buy your ticket by choosing "Reservation" in the registration form then by sending money to the M-BIRR number that will be sent to you by e-mail after you have reserved your ticket.

As an investor who wants to participate in the SAM, what rate should I choose?​

We offer several packages with regards to the purchase of tickets, which can be seen on our site.

- If you want to attend the SAM – the two days of conference – as well as the side events included in the price and open to all participants, please select 5 Day Entry Pass.

- If you want to attend the SAM – the two days of the conference – as well as the parallel events included in the price and open to all our participants, but you also would like to have a stand at the Investor's Fair, organised on Thursday, October 12th, to meet personally the African MFIs with whom you could create a partnership and in which you could potentially invest, please choose the Investor - Investor's Fair price. This price gives you access to a stand for one day at the Investor's Fair + access to the SAM 2017.

  • Stand for one day for the investor + 1 entry for the week = 1,500 €
  • Stand for one day for the investor + 2 entries for the week = 1,800 €
  • Stand for one day for the investor + 3 entries for the week = 2,000 €

After buying your investor's ticket, please complete the investor form.


How do I use my discount code?

Register on our “Tickets” page by selecting your pass on the first page of the registration form. 

Then, click on Do you have a discount code? Click here. An empty box will appear in which you can enter your discount code. Click on Apply.

Fill out the rest of the form. You will only be charged the reduced price.

Discount codes are given to speakers, partners, sponsors, members of our partner networks etc. If you are a member of one of these networks (AFRACA, MAIN, AMT, AMFI and AEMFI), please contact your network to receive a discount code.

How do I get my tickets after making the reservation? 

When you buy tickets, you will have the option of paying by credit card or by bank transfer. Credit card payments can be processed quickly, and as soon as we receive the payment you will be sent an email with your tickets. If you choose to pay by bank transfer, you will need to wait until we receive the payment or until you can send us a proof of payment, at which time the tickets will also be sent to your email inbox. Once you receive your tickets, you should begin to make visa arrangements. 


Do I have access to all the events organized during the SAM?

The SAM entrance ticket gives you access to the two-day conference with plenary and parallel sessions on the theme: Creating value for SMEs: A new frontier for inclusive finance.

The SAM ticket also guarantees access to the Research Meets Africa conference and the Innovation Fair.

The Investor's Fair, which brings together investors and African MFIs, is open to investors that have booked a table, as well as to MFIs registered with SAM and who have completed their form.

Apart from that, you can also participate in several free trainings and workshops organized by our partners. Please register as soon as possible as places are limited!

Some paid training courses are also offered and these courses take place over two or three days.

Some events bring together a very specific public and therefore are only accessible by invitation.

Where is the conference and how do I get there?

The conference will be located at the Sheraton Addis.

There will be free shuttles from our partner hotels to the Sheraton Addis conference center.


How do I get my visa for Ethiopia?

Once you are officially registered for the SAM and have paid your inscription, you can begin making visa arrangements. There are 3 options on how to proceed with the visa process:

1. You are an Ethiopian citizen: you do not need a visa to take part in the African Microfinance Week in Addis Ababa. Your will only need to bring your entrance ticket with you at the Sheraton.

2. You are a Kenyan or Djiboutian citizen: you do not need a visa to take part in the African Microfinance Week in Addis Ababa. Within a few days, you will receive a letter of invitation by email. Upon arrival at the Addis Ababa airport, please present this letter of invitation, in addition to your entrance ticket attached to this email.

3. You are NOT an Ethiopian, Kenyan, or Djiboutian citizen: there are two options with how to proceed with the visa process:​

  • You live in a country without an Ethiopian embassy: you will receive a letter of invitation by email. Then, to facilitate your visa process, please send a scanned copy of your passport - and resident card if needed - to . Within a few days after we receive this or these document(s), you will receive your travel authorization by email, which allows you to fly into Ethiopia. Upon arrival at the Addis Ababa airport, please present this travel authorization to an immigration official and pay the visa fee. You will need your letter of invitation, your entrance ticket and your hotel reservation requested by the embassy.
  • You live in a country with an Ethiopian embassy: you will receive a letter of invitation by email. Then, please send a scanned copy of your passport - and resident card if needed - to . We will transmit this or these document(s) to the Ethiopian government in order to obtain a pre-clearance which allows you to enter Ethiopian territory. You will then receive an email, confirming that you have obtained this pre-clearance. You will then have to go to the Ethiopian embassy in your country to ask for your visa. Indeed, obtaining a pre-clearance does not exempt you from the requested documents by the embassy to get your visa (passport, photo, vaccination card...). You will need your letter of invitation and your entrance ticket when you go to the embassy.

Please take note that it may take several weeks for your visa to be processed. We recommend that you begin the process as soon as possible after receiving your letter of invitation.


How do I get to Addis Ababa?

Most visitors to Addis Ababa arrive at the Bole International Airport, located less than 10km southeast of the city, though there are many other airports in Ethiopia. Ethiopian Airlines is one of the major carriers, though many other international airlines fly into Bole, including United, Lufthansa, Emirates and Turkish Airlines. Some of our partner hotels provide shuttle services to and from the airport. You can also pick up a taxi (settle on a fixed price before the ride) at the desk inside the arrivals hall or just outside the airport.


Where should I stay in Addis Ababa?

What is the weather like in Addis Ababa in October?

October is a good time to go the Ethiopia, as it is the beginning of the dry season. Rain is still possible however, so be prepared. The temperature during the day can be quite warm, with an average of 20-25°C (68-77°F), but it cools down at night to 11-14°C (52-59°C).
