The SAM bags are ready!

SAC ADA x Gafreh 01

The SAM is a week to exchange ideas and find new pathways that will positively impact the lives of thousands of people. That is why ADA, which organizes the African Microfinance Week, had the conference bags designed by GAFREH, a cooperative of women from Burkina Faso who give a second life to plastic bags scattered in nature to transform them into bags.

This activity allows women to gain financial autonomy through their work and helps to preserve the environment. Every year, 15 tons of plastic bags are collected and recycled by more than 100 women. These jobs provide a livelihood for 500 to 1,000 people.

The GAFREH (Groupe d'Action des Femmes pour la Relance Economique du Houet) shop is located in Bobo-Dioulasso.

Bag manufacturing
The women of Bobo-Dioulasso start by collecting plastic bags from nature, before washing, drying and cutting them into plastic strips that they tie together. Then, they prepare the shuttle and mount the cotton yarns on the loom, in order to weave them with the bag strips. Finally, they cut the fabric and sew it into bags.
